Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week- Winter Wonderland.  This is a non-fiction story about what winter is like.  It was very winter like this week so the students could relate to it.  We also read another story- Snow by Cynthia Rylant.  We compared and contrasted the 2 stories. The students also learned some new vocabulary: gentle, vanish, astonishing, sparkle, trembling, howling, twinkling, and sneaky.

Jolly Phonics
This week we learned the letters qu and ou and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words our, here, and out.  Remember we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week from now until the end of the year!  Please practice the words at home.

Math
We continued learning about shapes.  The students are having fun with these.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 16-20, games about shapes, math games on the i-pad, writing teen numbers and counting ten frames, coloring a castle of shapes, creating a face out of shapes, and making a shape robot book.

Writing/ Handwriting
We practiced the letter v and w in handwriting this week.  We did a fun craft today- a picture of a child with their head back catching a snowflake.  They are cute hanging in the room!

**Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.  They are welcome to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day.  Please bring it filled, we do not fill water bottles during the day.  If they drink it all, then they can get water from the drinking fountain.  Thanks!**

** Remember the 100 day homework assignment is due next Friday, January 29**

** Next Friday, January 29 is also pajama day!  Students may wear their comfortable pajamas to school!**

Have a great weekend!
