Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

 Reading
We read a story this week Brave Bear  that worked on the new skill wondering.  We learned 2 new vocabulary words- doubtful and confident.  Ask your child what they mean.   We read another poem this week called "Let's Build A Snowman."   We also squeezed in 2 days of our daily 5 rotations.

Jolly Phonics
We added the letter "oi" and "ue" this week to our sounds. Ask your child what the action is that goes with the 2 sounds. We only added two new popcorn words this week- "get" and "help". We will add the third one next week.  So, we will have 4 new words next week instead of 3.  Our assembly on Friday went longer than I anticipated so we were not able to get to Jolly Phonics at the end of the day as planned. :(

Math
We squeezed in our centers this week on shapes.  The students enjoyed these. Next week we will start learning about adding numbers.

Writing/ Handwriting
We wrote a sentence and drew a picture about Alyssa since she was our star student this week.  We also made a snowman out of our name.

How about this weather??!! I feel like we are constantly trying to squeeze in our week into 3 days!  Crazy!   More snow this weekend and next week as well!!  Yikes!

** Next week on Tuesday, February 4 it is an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00.  Lunch will not be served.

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

 Reading
We read a poem called "Umbrellas"  that worked on the skill visualizing again.  We learned 2 new vocabulary words- pleasant and unpleasant.  Ask your child what they mean.   We read another poem this week called "The Chubby Little Snowman."   We also did our daily 5 rotations.

Jolly Phonics
We added the letter "qu" and "ou" this week to our sounds. Ask your child what the action is that goes with the 2 sounds. We added three new popcorn words as well- "our", "here", and "out". Point out the popcorn words in stories you read to your children as well. Then, when they are reading to self during daily 5 they will recognize those words and be proud that they can read them. I did check all the students on their knowledge of the popcorn words we have learned so far this week.  There are 37 words, not including this weeks words, so if you get a letter home with an attached list of words, those are the ones to practice.  I will be sending those home next week.  If you do not get one, that means your child knew them all.  Overall, the class did really well, no one has a ton to practice- so they must be practicing at home! Thanks!! :)

Math
We did centers this week on shapes.  The students enjoyed these. We will continue with shapes again next week.  You should see a shape book come home today that we made this week, as well as, some activities from the learning centers.

Writing/ Handwriting
We made and wrote a Martin Luther King activity this week.  They are hanging up in the room.  We also did a mitten craft and read a story about a mitten.
Some students will be receiving progress reports today in the green folders.  Please look these over and sign and return next week.  Remember these skills are what needs to be mastered by March 7 for 2nd trimester report cards.  So, these are things to work on with your child if they are not meeting them.

** Next week on Friday, January 31, it is pajama day- so your child is welcome to come to school in comfortable pajamas. :) **

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

 Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

 Reading
We reread the story Cat's Colors and worked on the skill visualizing.  This is a neat skill to practice with the students and they had fun doing it. We did not have enough time to get to vocabulary this week with it being short.  We read a poem this week called I'm A Friendly Snowman.  We did not do daily 5 rotations this week, instead we practiced our new rotation- working on writing.  The students will add this rotation to their daily 5 next week.  I think they will enjoy it.  A lot more writing and practicing sounding out words.

Jolly Phonics
We added the letter "ch" and "sh" this week to our sounds. Ask your child what the action is that goes with the 2 sounds. We added three new popcorn words as well- "the", "you", and "down". Point out the popcorn words in stories you read to your children as well. Then, when they are reading to self during daily 5 they will recognize those words and be proud that they can read them.

Handwriting
We did not get to any handwriting this week.  But we did do some practicing of writing in our new daily 5  rotation.

Math
We did not get to do centers this week because of the short week.  We will do them next week.  I did introduce place value to them, finding the tens and ones in double digit numbers.  We will continue practicing this next week too.

Writing
We wrote and drew something we like about Mick since he was our star student for the week. We also made a snowman craft using paint and q-tips.
We welcomed a new student in our class this week- Joshua.  The students have done a good job welcoming him into our classroom and showing him our routine. :)  We now have 12 girls and 8 boys!

** Next week on Wednesday, January 15, we have an early dismissal.  The students will be dismissed at 12:00 and lunch will not be served here. **

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break!  What a crazy weather system we had over break- we definitely got a lot of snow for the kids to play in, however, it got too cold to enjoy it!  I hope they weren't too crazy for you the extra 2 days you had them home. :)  Have a great weekend!
