Mrs. Olsen's 4th Grade Blog



Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year!

This will be a weekly reminder of what is coming up in the following week.  I will send it out as an email to the parents on Fridays.

General reminders:
1.  Binders should come back and forth to school everyday with your child.  Please check their binders for homework.
2. Make sure chromebooks are charged before coming to school everyday.
3.  Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns you have with your child. jolsen@ccsd66.org

This is what we will be working on for the week of February 3-7, 2020!

Spelling:
We will have a new list of words next week.  They will be focusing on greek roots again- micro, hydra, astro, hydro, and path.  Our test will be Friday, February 7.

English/Reading::
We started our profile in courage project this week.  They will finish them up over the weekend if they need to and we will start presenting them on Monday.  I suggested they have their parents check over their spelling and grammar before presenting it.

Social Studies/Science:
We continued our learning about the Midwest this week.  We will finish up the Midwest next week.  In science, we continue working on chapter 3, where we will be comparing different engineers jobs.
 
SEL:
 This week we practiced strategies on how to calm down when you are feeling anger.  Please take a look at the purple home link that went home too.  This is a great way to continue using the strategies your child is learning  here at school and use them at home too.  Next week we will be discussing and learning how to manage anxiety.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We will be finishing unit 4 next week and plan on the test for Friday, February 7.  I am going to see how the week goes and see if we need to stretch it to Monday, February 10.  I will let the students know next week about that.  Please look for their study guide to come home to go through and make sure they understand anything they get wrong on the study guide.  The study guide and test are very similar!  Please make sure you check my sign up genius for a conference time slot.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4aa4af22a5f85-february80

Important Info:
We had a great time at the Museum of Science and Industry yesterday!  Thanks to Ms. Grace- Kylah's grandmother, Mr. Begler, Mrs. Hanna, and Tia-Liam's aunt for coming and chaperoning for us!  See below for some pictures that were taken there!

Mrs. Olsen's 4th Grade Blog

This is what we will be working on for the week of January 27-31, 2020!

Spelling:
We will have a new list of words next week.  They will be focusing on greek roots- audi, bio, geo, ology, meter, and thermo.  Our test will be Friday, January 31.

English/Reading::
We presented all our projects this week on mythology!  It was fun for the students to do and present!  They did a great job!  Next week we will be working on our next project- finding a person who is courageous and creating a profile on that person.  

Social Studies/Science:
We started learning about the Midwest this week.  We will continue with the Midwest next week as well.  In science, we will continue with chapter 3 on learning about what energy converters are and where we find them.

SEL:
 This week we did some fun cold/snow thoughts and discussions.  Next week we will be touching on learning how to calm down when you are feeling anger.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We finished up the subtraction strategies part of this unit this week and touched on some measurement words and topics today.  We will continue with more measurement next week.  We only have 2 days of math next week due to our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry next week for all of the fourth grade.  You should see coming home today the subtraction checkpoint we took yesterday.  The majority of the students did not do as well as I expected but I told them it is only 8 points so to not get too worked up about how they did.  But please make sure they understand what they got wrong on it.

Important Info:
Next week we have our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on Thursday, January 30!  Please remember to send your child with a sack lunch that can be thrown away after eating.

Wednesday, January 29 is a half day.  The students will get dismissed at 11:00 and will not be eating lunch at school.

Tuesday, January 28 the students have earned a marble party for behavior!  They filled the jar with marbles!  We will be watching a movie and I will bring in a snack for them.  They can wear their pajamas to school that day!

Monday, January 27 is the school spelling bee for 2 students from our class- Anthony Dimitriou (1st place) and Luke Tunney(Runner up)!  They won the spelling bee we had in our classroom and will compete against kids from the rest of the school.  The winner from the school will be in the district spelling bee on February 11 at 6:30 pm.

This is what we will be working on for the week of January 21-24, 2020!

Spelling:
We will have a new list of words next week.  They will be focusing on the soft "g".  Our test will be Friday, January 24.

English/Reading::
We have been working hard on our mythology projects.  We will hopefully finish these up next week and start presenting them towards the end of the week!  Looking forward to seeing these!

Social Studies/Science:
We finished putting our SE part of the USA map together this week and I introduced the Midwest to them.  They will have the Midwest map to fill out for homework tonight and then the quiz on the states next Friday, January 24.  In science, we will continue with chapter 3 on energy conversions.

SEL:
 This week we continued to talk more about emotional management.  We will do some fun journal entries and discussions next week for our morning meeting.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We did well on the addition strategies work sample and checkpoint this week. You should have seen those come home.  We learned about subtraction strategies this week and will be doing a subtraction work sample on Tuesday, January 21 and a subtraction checkpoint on Thursday, January 23.  We talked about how it is similar to what we did this week only using subtraction.  I anticipate the students will do well again. 

Important Info:
We had a great trip to the Oak Trace Senior Living Facility!  Thanks to Mrs. Galdikaite and Mrs. Vidal fro joining us!  I will add some pictures from the trip to the bottom of the blog.

Monday, January 20- no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.



Thanks to the parents who donated tissue boxes already!  I appreciate it! :)

** We are down to our final tissue boxes for the year! If anyone would like to donate a box or two it would be greatly appreciated!  These 4 boxes won't last till June!! I have a ton of plastic bags- I will send your child home with plastic bags in place of the tissue boxes contribution! :)

This is what we will be working on for the week of January 13-17, 2020!

Spelling:
We have been learning our new words this week and will continue with the same ones next week.  They all have to do with mythology.  Our test will be Friday, January 17.

English/Reading::
We started our unit on mythology.  The students are enjoying learning about the allusions and we have had some fun talking about the myths as well.  I am introducing the project this afternoon they will be working on for the next week.  They will be teaching the myth they choose to the class through a project- newspaper article, song, slide show, play, etc.  These will be fun to see!  We are also adding to our RACES writing form this week.  We will be practicing more on written responses using this full form now.

Social Studies/Science:
The students this week learned about the Cherokee Native American tribe from the southeast.  We will be filling out our SE portion of our USA map next week.  We also took a quiz today on the Cherokee using their books as guidance.  In science, we started chapter 3 on energy conversions, we are talking about energy sources and where the energy comes from!

SEL:
 Next week we will continue to learn more about emotion management.  

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We started unit 4 on place value and the standard algorithm of addition.  The students are doing well so far this week on these topics.  We will have a work sample, I will be taking a grade on, on Monday, January 13.  They have 5 addition or subtraction problems.  They need to solve them and pick which method they used and tell why they chose the method they did.  This should not be hard for them, they seem to be ready for this!  We then have a checkpoint on Tuesday, January 14.  This will be on rounding, writing numbers in expanded form and written form, addition, and comparing numbers.

Important Info:
Thursday, January 16- we will be going to Oak Trace to read and play games with senior citizens living there.  **Please make sure your child comes to school with games and books to bring with to play and read with the seniors.**

Next Monday- Wednesday we will have some common assessments we will be taking for ELA and math.

Monday, January 20- no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.
