Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week- The Relatives Came.  This is a great story about relatives that come from Virginia to stay with a family for a few weeks.  We were able to do some fun geography about places we have been in the U.S. and the world today.  The students also learned some new vocabulary:  tend, squeeze, wrinkled, silent, and relatives.

Jolly Phonics
This week we learned the letters ch and sh and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words the, you, and down.  As of this week, we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week!  Please practice the words at home.

Math
We have started this week learning about shapes.  The students have had fun with these and really know many of the shapes already.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 11-20, making shapes with tangram pieces, math games on the i-pad, making shapes with play-doh, counting by 2's worksheet, and making shape books.

Writing/ Handwriting
We practiced the letter u and s in handwriting this week.  We read The Mitten today and made a mitten craft with shapes and patterns on it.  These look really cute.

**Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.  They are welcome to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day.  Please bring it filled, we do not fill water bottles during the day.  If they drink it all, then they can get water from the drinking fountain.  Thanks!**

** Remember early dismissal next Friday, January 15 and no school on Monday, January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.  The students will leave before lunch and not eat at school for the early dismissal day**

**I hope everyone had a great winter break and a Happy New Year!**

Have a great weekend!
