Mrs. Olsen's 4th Grade Blog



General reminders:
1.  Binders should come back and forth to school everyday with your child.  Please check their binders for homework.
2. Make sure chromebooks are charged before coming to school everyday.

March 4 - March 8 News!

Spelling:
  We will be learning about adjectives and how they describe nouns.  We will be talking about how adjectives can really enhance our writing and make it more descriptive and visual. Our test will be Friday, March 8. 

English/Reading:
We are still reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  The students are enjoying the book and we have been doing some open ended questions for more practice in writing while reading the story.

Social Studies/Science:
  We finished up chapter 8 in social studies on the midwest.  Test will be Tuesday, March 5.  The students are bringing home their study guide and stapled to it is some activities we did in class they can use to study for it.

Math:
We will be finishing up unit 5 next week.  Test is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, March 12.  I will let the students know next week the exact date.  We need to see how quickly or slowly we need to get through the last lessons.  The students had their last checkpoint before grades come out for trimester 2.  They all did well on it so they were happy!

Important Info:
No school- Friday, March 1- teacher institute
End of trimester 1- March 1
March 11- our class is going to Oak Trace Senior Living Community to read and play games with the senior citizens!  Elizabeth I has been doing this the past couple years and invited us to join them.  It should be fun!
March 13- our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry- make sure to send your child with a lunch that can be thrown away after eating it.
March 20- we have an author visiting us- Tom Watson- he is the author of the stick dog and cat books.

 February 25 - March 1 News!

Spelling:
  We will be learning about relative adverbs and pronouns, as well as, some reading content words in spelling. Our test will be Thursday, February 28. 

English/Reading:
We started reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  We will be continuing with this next week.  We will also be looking at some poems as well and some examples of personification in the poems.

Social Studies/Science:
  We are finishing up chapter 8 in social studies on the midwest.  Test is tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 4.  Will know for sure next week depending on how we do with our lessons. 

Math:
We are continuing to learn about polygons and angles.  Next week, on Tuesday, we will have our last checkpoint grade before the end of the trimester.  I sent home a red study sheet for what the students need to know for the checkpoint.  Please make sure they understand those concepts on the sheet.  They should do fine then! :)

Thanks to the moms who helped out for our Valentine Party last week as well!  The students had a great time!

 February 19 - February 22 News!

Spelling:
  We will be working next week on more homographs.  Our test will be Friday, February 22. 

English/Reading:
We will be starting to read and dive into the novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane next week.  This is a great book by Kate DiCamillo.  

Social Studies/Science:
  We will continue learning about the midwest in Social Studies.  We will be learning about the badlands next week in South Dakota!  We will continue with energy and looking into possible solutions for the blackout in science next week!

Math:
We are continuing our work on unit 5.  We have learned about perpendicular and parallel lines and how to properly find and measure angles with a protractor.  We had a checkpoint this week and the students did great!

 February 11 - February 15 News!

Spelling:
  We will be working next week on the greek and latin roots of uni-, bi-, tri-, and quad-.  There are only 10 words and 10 vocab words, some coincide with each other.  Our test will be Thursday, February 14 because of no school on Friday, February 15.  

English/Reading:
We will be continuing with our new unit on Journeys.  We will be close reading the song The River by Garth Brooks. We will also be answering an open ended question pertaining to the song.

Social Studies/Science:
  We will continue learning about the midwest in Social Studies.  We did more science this week and learned about energy converters and why the hospital in Ergstown did not lose power in the blackouts.  We are hopefully getting closer to finding the answer to why Ergstown keeps having blackouts.

Math:
We started unit 5 on geometry.  We have learned about different angles, radius, diameter, and circumference of a circle.

Important Info:
I sent home a list of the names in the class for Valentines.  Please send one in for each child in the class if you are sending them in.Thanks!
Valentine Party is Thursday, February 14 at 1:30.

 February 4 - February 8 News!

Spelling:
  We will be working next week on the prefix ch- and -tch.  Our test will be Friday, February 8.  

English/Reading:
We finished presenting the profiles in courage project.  The students got their grades back on those today. We are reading and discussing the story Grandfather's Journey. Next week we will be working on responding to an open ended question pertaining to the story.

Social Studies/Science:
  We did not get to science this week because of all the snow days.  We will do more next week.  We started the midwest today.  We will have our midwest quiz on Friday, February 8.

Math:
We finished unit 4 and the students were able to get their test in even with all the snow days! We will start unit 5 on geometry next week!
