Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 











  Reading 
We read a story this week called The Snowy Day.  It is a fun story about what a snow day is like for a boy and what he chooses to do. Some vocab words we learned this week were: snowsuit, smacking, pretended, heaping,  and adventures.  I sent home today an activity that you can do at retelling the story.  :)

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "oi" and "ue".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 3 popcorn words- "get", "help" and "now".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We finished topic 8 this week on subtraction.  We started topic 9 which is more practicing of addition and subtraction.  We did some winter math activities during our center time that involved addition and subtraction, as well as counting up from different places.  

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter Nn in handwriting this week.  We did a snowman glyph activity today, the children are bringing them home to show you.  These came out cute and the children enjoyed making them and we made a graph recording all the data from the whole class.  We were able to read some of the books today for pajama day but couldn't get to all of them. :(

I sent home a 100th day project today with the students.  Please look in their green folder for it. :)

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 











  Reading 
We read a story this week called Winter Wonderland.  It is a non-fiction book all about what winter is like.  We did some visualizing with the story. Some vocab words we learned this week were: gentle, vanish, astonishing, sparkle, trembling, howling, twinkle, and sneaky.  

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "qu" and "ou".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 3 popcorn words- "our", "here" and "out".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We are continuing with topic 8 this week- subtraction!  We did some winter math activities during our center time.  

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter Rr in handwriting this week, as well as, a review of a few letters.  We did another snowman craft today with our name.  We did another craft this afternoon with a child catching a snowflake on their tongues- these are cute and are hanging outside the classroom. :)

Friday, January 30 is pajama day next week.  Wear your cozy pajamas and bring a favorite bedtime book to read at school. :)

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 











  Reading 
We read a story this week called Love You Forever.  It is about a mother who rocks her baby and sings a song every night to him as he gets older and even as a grown-up!  It is very sweet and can bring a tear to my eye every time I read it! :)  Some vocab words we learned this week were: rocked, flushed, strange, and grown-up.  

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "ng" and "th".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 3 popcorn words- "he", "she" and "be".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We started topic 8 this week- subtraction!  We will continue to practice addition and subtraction during our center time.  

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter Pp in handwriting this week.  We did a snowman craft today with paint.  We also talked about the holiday we have on Monday- we did a song(which they loved), read a poem, and read our Weekly Reader about Martin Luther King.
We made a book for Nate, since he was the star student this week.

Remember, Monday- January 19 we do not have school due to the Martin Luther King holiday.  Enjoy the long weekend!

We welcomed a new student this week in class- Saba.  She is adjusting well to our classroom and the students have been very helpful welcoming her here. :)

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 











  Reading 
We read a story this week called The Relatives Came.  It was about a family who comes to visit some of their relatives and all that goes with visiting relatives! :)  Some vocab words we learned this week were: tend, squeeze, wrinkled, and silent.  We did do a poem today about Grandmas and Grandpas and how wonderful they are!  We did not get to do all the activities we had planned for the story because of the short week and snow (cold) days.

We learned about the letters "ch" and "sh".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 3 popcorn words- "the", "you" and "down".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We finished up topic 7 this week- understanding addition.  We will continue to practice addition during our center time.  We will start topic 8 next week on understanding subtraction.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase b in handwriting this week.  We did a mitten craft today.
We made a book for Aiden, since he was the star student this week.

Next week we have an early dismissal day on Friday, January 16.  Students get out at 12:00 and do not eat lunch here.
Gym night is tonight here at Ide- if you are going have fun! :)  

Welcome to winter!  What a crazy weather week- I hope you were able to enjoy the 2 days off with your child and stayed warm! :)
