Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read another non fiction book this week Tools.  We learned a new vocab word -useful- that goes with the book.  During daily 5 this week we did many activities that involved stamping and writing CVC words.  We finished the lion and lamb craft and started our writing activity on how we are more like lion or lamb weather.  We did not get to finish it, so will have to do that after spring break.

Jolly Phonics
We focused on the word families "ed" and "en" this week.  We added three new popcorn words this week- "who",  "what", and "where". Keep practicing those popcorn books- we have a lot of words now!

Math
We introduced, length, height, and weight this week during math.  During centers we did a bunch of leprechaun and shamrock activities on adding, measuring, and skip counting.

Writing/ Handwriting
We wrote a sentence and drew a picture about Ava this week since she is star student.

**Thanks to the Hines and Rinaldi families for donating Kleenex, paper towels, and wipes!**  We still could use all 3 items!  All of the kindergarten classrooms are running low and we changed the supply list for next year because of this. :)

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read some St.Patrick's Day books this week.  We did some rhyming activities in our Daily 5 centers this week as well.  The past couple weeks I have been using the IPAD I received from the PTO to do some fun games with the students during Daily 5.  They love doing this! :)  We also talked about the weather in spring and how it can be like a lion or a lamb.  We did a craft this week for a lion and next week we will do a lamb.  We will then do a writing activity next week to finish the lion and lamb weather activity.

Jolly Phonics
We focused on the word family short i this week.  We added three new popcorn words this week- "do",  "all", and "there". Keep practicing those popcorn books- we have a lot of words now!

Math
We practiced more of making number sentences this week.  We focused a little more on subtraction this week, as well as, making a number sentence using pictures.  They seemed to think this was pretty cool and helpful!

Writing/ Handwriting
We wrote a story about a day in the life of kindergarten.  The students had fun doing this and are excited for me to share it with my class next year. :)  They think it is pretty cool that we would write a book for another class! We still need to finish it up next week.

**Thanks to the Hines family for donating Kleenex and paper towels!**  We still could use Kleenex and paper towels, and now I noticed we are almost out of wet wipes!!  I noticed many of the kindergarten classrooms are running low on these items, so I am thinking it has to do with all day kindergarten.  We are going through supplies a lot quicker than in the past.  So any donations are greatly appreciated!! :)

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read 2 non-fiction books this week- A Day with A Doctor and A Day with A Mail Carrier.  We talked about the components that are in a non-fiction book and were able to make connections to ourselves and between the books.  We also learned some new vocabulary words with the books- prevent and healthy.  We did some beginning and ending sound activities in our Daily 5 centers this week.

Jolly Phonics
We focused on the word families -ip and -ing  this week.  We added three new popcorn words this week- "soon",  "went", and "come". Keep practicing those popcorn books- we have a lot of words now!

Math
We practiced more with adding and making number sentences this week.  We also introduced fact families to the students.  We took our second addition timed test this afternoon on +1.  The students who did not get 8/10 or higher on the +0 test had to take the +0 test again.  This will be the same for all the tests.  Before they can move ahead to the higher number they need to get 8/10 correct in a minute. Next week we will skip +2 since it is short week and do +2 the following week.  So, practice those math facts. :)

Writing/ Handwriting
We wrote and drew a picture about Lauren this week since she was our star student.  We did a journal on what we do not like about winter and shared it with each other.  These were very interesting to listen to- the students definitely are ready for spring and warmer weather! :)  We also made a rainbow craft this afternoon.

**We got enough pencils and glue sticks to last us until the end of the year (I hope!); however, we are running really low on Kleenex and paper towels- so anyone who would like to donate those to the class it would be greatly appreciated! :)**

** Remember, NO SCHOOL on Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18 next week.**

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
It was Dr. Seuss week here in kindergarten!  The students had a lot of fun dressing wacky and reading lots of Dr. Seuss books.  We learned about Dr. Seuss in our Weekly Reader this week too.  All of our morning work had to do with Dr. Seuss and some of his books.  We did a green eggs and ham craft today as well.

Jolly Phonics
We focused on the word families -it and -in  this week.  We added three new popcorn words this week- "this",  "that", and "new".

Math
We practiced adding and subtracting number sentences this week.  The students seem to really understand the concept of making a number sentence by putting manipulatives together or taking them apart.  Subtraction is a little more challenging than addition.  But we will continue to master those.  We took our first addition timed test this afternoon on +0.  We will be doing those weekly to practice fluency of addition sentences.  After we do all the way to +5, we will start subtraction fluency tests.

Writing/ Handwriting
We wrote and drew a picture about Emily this week since she was our star student.

**Thanks to the Rinaldi, Yurchak, and Hines families for donating pencils and glue sticks-  I think we should be good until the end of the year!  Thanks so much!!**

**Remember spring ahead this weekend!  I think everyone is happy for that after the winter we have had!**

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!
