Mrs. Olsen's 4th Grade Blog



Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year!

This will be a weekly reminder of what is coming up in the following week.  I will send it out as an email to the parents on Fridays.

General reminders:
1.  Binders should come back and forth to school everyday with your child.  Please check their binders for homework.
2. Make sure chromebooks are charged before coming to school everyday.
3.  Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns you have with your child. jolsen@ccsd66.org

This is what we will be working on the for the week of November 5-8!

Spelling:
Next week we will be working on the suffixes -ment, -tion, and -ly.  It can change the meaning or part of speech of the word.  The test will be Friday, November 8.

English:
We had fun writing a description of our Halloween costume for everyone to guess.  These will be added to our portfolios.

Reading:
  Next week we be practicing more on answering text dependent questions and diving deeper into the story we read Happy Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King. We will be practicing summarizing as well.

Social Studies/Science:
We started our United States map this week and will finish it up next week on the Northeast region.  This map will be filled out throughout the year and then brought home at the end of the year once we have finished studying all the regions in the U.S.  We will also start the Southeast region next week.  Quiz on that will not be until the following week.  I will let you know next week when that will be. 
We did a fun bones activity today in science for Halloween!  Next week we will start chapter 2 in science on energy converters.

SEL:
This week we learned how to understand different perspectives in classmates, friends, and family members. Next week, we will be reviewing the lessons we have learned so far in the year.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We will finish up unit 2 on Tuesday next week.  The plan is to have the review and study guide on Wednesday and the unit 2 test on Thursday, November 7.  Please watch for the study guide to come home with red marks- those are the things to practice for the test.  The study guide and test are very similar!

Important Info:

Next week is a short week also, no school on Monday, November 4 for a teacher institute.

This is what we will be working on the for the week of October 28-31!

Spelling:
Next week we will be working on the prefixes pre-, re-, and mis-.  It can change the meaning or part of speech of the word.  The test will be THURSDAY, October 31.

English:
Next week we will be working on a descriptive paragraph of our Halloween costume and then guessing what the costume is!  This should be fun!

Reading:
  This week we talked about theme and did some activities with it.  We also learned some background history on Dr. Martin Luther King so we are ready to start the story on him next week. 

Social Studies/Science:
We will be finishing up the Narragansett villages today or over the weekend.  So far they look great!  Tuesday, October 29 we will have an open book quiz on the Narrangansett.  
In science we have finished up chapter 1 and will have a quiz on Monday, October 28 over the vocab words we have learned so far. The students should have put in their binders the vocab words they need to study.

SEL:
This week we learned how to understand complex feelings in classmates, friends, and family members. Next week, we will be learning about understanding different perspectives of feelings in people.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We had our 2 checkpoints this week.  Next week we will be finishing up unit 2 on multiplication and division.  I am planning on reviewing with the students for unit 2 on Tuesday, November 5 and the unit 2 test on Wednesday, November 6.  As long as next week goes as planned, this will be the plan.

Important Info:

Next week is a short week, no school on Friday, November 1.
Parent conferences are also next week on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 29-30.  Looking forward to meeting and discussing your child's progress in 4th grade.
Halloween parade-2:00 and party-1:00-2:00 is Thursday, October 31.

This is what we will be working on the for the week of October 21-26!

Spelling:
This week we will be working on some 4th grade spelling and vocabulary words.  We will be practicing and learning these words throughout the week.  The test will be Friday, October 26.

English:
You will see the Unit 1 test come home this week, please sign and return it for me.  We started last week- Free Write Friday- the students got time to write whatever they want and share with the class.  They can do a journal, a story, or anything they feel like writing about.  They enjoyed this!

Reading:
  We will continue with our new unit on Courage next week.  We will be reading a story entitled Happy Birthday Dr. King.  We will dig in deep to the story and theme within the story.

Social Studies/Science:
We learned about the Narragansett Native American tribe this week from the Northeast.  We will be doing a project next week on creating a Narragansett village. We are working hard on figuring out what the problem is in Ergstown.  We have created some simple electrical machines and experimented with them and finding their source of energy.

SEL:
Next week we will be learning how to understand complex feelings in classmates, friends, and family members. Look for the purple flyer to come home next Friday for activities to reinforce at home. 

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We will be having 2 checkpoints or quizzes next week.  The first will be on Tuesday, October 22.  The homework for Monday night will be reviewing what will be on it.  The second one will be on Friday, October 25.  Again, the homework on Thursday night will review what will be on the quiz too.

This is what we will be working on the for the week of October 15-18!

Spelling:
This week we will be working on the suffixes -ness, -less, and -en.  We will be practicing and learning these words throughout the week.  The test will be Friday, October 18.

English:
We finished up our first unit in English this week.  The students reviewed and we have our unit 1 test on Tuesday, October 15.  We will start today- Free Write Friday- the students will get time to write whatever they want and share if they want with the class.  They can do a journal, a story, or anything they feel like writing about.  They are excited for this!

Reading:
  We will be starting our new unit on Courage next week.  We will be reading a story entitled Happy Birthday Dr. King.  We will dig in deep to the story and theme within the story.

Social Studies/Science:
We took our chapter 4 test today.  We will learn about the people of the Northeast next week in Social Studies.  We also have started our first unit in science on Energy.  I forgot to update you on this, but we have been doing it the past couple weeks.  The students have become engineers and are trying to figure out why the city of "Ergstown" is having so many blackouts!  Ask your child if they know any new vocab words from science.

SEL:
We have been learning about being empathetic to people who have similarities and differences than us.  You should have seen a purple flyer come home yesterday about some examples of having similar and different feelings in scenarios they were presented.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We have started unit 2 on multiplication and division using arrays.  We really dived into it today and I think some the of students might still be a little confused.  A few students have come in for extra help at recess, please express to your child if they are not understanding to please come in and get some extra help and practice from me. :) 

Important Info:

Band started this week, please make sure your child knows what they missed in class and makes up the work for it!

October 14- No school in observance of Columbus Day.

October 17- My class has earned their first Marble Party!  I will be ordering pizza and showing a movie on that day, so if your child does not like pizza make sure they bring a lunch to eat with us.  If anyone wants to send a $1 in with their child to help with the expense of the pizza it will be greatly appreciated! :)

Spelling:
This week we will be working on the suffixes -ed and -ing.  We will be practicing and learning these words throughout the week.  The test will be Friday, October 11.

English:
We will finish up our first unit in English next week.  The students will be reviewing at the end of next week and have our unit 1 test on Tuesday, October 15.

Reading:
  We finished up the poem titled "Casey at the Bat" this week.  We compared it to another song or poem this week and did some comparing and contrasting activities with it.  Our next unit will be on Courage.

Social Studies/Science:
We have finished the environment part of the Northeast region.   We will have our first Social Studies test on Friday, October 11.  I will send home the study guide on Monday.  The review activities we have done will be in your child's Social Studies folder.  Please use these to help study for the test.

SEL:
We have been learning about being assertive this week in certain circumstances.  Ask your child when and why it is good to be assertive!  You will start to see flyers coming home with activities you can do to help with the lesson we are learning about in school for SEL.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
  We had our unit 1 test this week.  The students did pretty well on it. :) You should have seen it come home and returned it signed.  We have done some linear measurement activities this week and will start unit 2 next week on building multiplication arrays.
