Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week- Hey, Little Ant. It is a cute story about an ant and a kid.  The kid wants to squish the ant and the ant is telling him he shouldn't.  The story doesn't really have an ending.  We needed to decide what the kid should do.  We had fun with this today making a craft of the kid squishing or not squishing the ant and a writing piece to go with it.  We learned some new words with the story: squish, decide, crook, and crumbs.

Jolly Phonics
This week we learned about the word family -op.  We added 4 popcorn words- "came", "make", "want", and "with".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :)  We also learned some blends this week- sn, sp, st and sw.  We learned lots of new words while blending! :)

Math
We finished topic 13 this week on sorting, classifying and analyzing data.  We have started topic 14 on shapes!  This is a fun topic!  Our centers this week were some practicing with measuring, adding and subtracting, skip counting by 5's, and writing the numbers before and after teen numbers.

Writing/ Handwriting
We did not get to handwriting this week- we did a couple Earth projects instead. :)  We are still working on our story- hopefully we will finish those up next week and you can see them! :)  We did a fun craft today that had to do with squishing the ant- the writing activity we glued to the back- did we squish the ant or not?? :)

Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be a 100%juice, fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.

We will have until the end of the school year Mrs. Grishow in our classroom as a helper.  She has been helping out with a lot of things and the students are enjoying the extra help in the room. :)  She goes by a few names- Mrs. G or Mrs. Lori too- in case you hear your child mention that name.

Thank you to the families of Shivang Patel and Paul Raftis for donating glue sticks this week- we are using them!! :)

Next week on Friday, May 1 is gym night at Elizabeth Ide from 6:30-8:00.

Thanks to all the families who came for Open House last night!  It was great to see you and I hope you enjoyed seeing all your child's hard work! :)

Have a great weekend!

Math
We continued with topic 13 this week on sorting, classifying and analyzing data.  This can be done at home a lot.  Give your child a bunch of items and have them classify and sort them into colors, shapes, sizes, etc...Our centers this week were all about measuring different items and objects with different attributes.  They had fun with these and did really well!  We also made a flower counting by 10's.

Writing/ Handwriting
We practiced writing and discussing where the period and comma go in handwriting this week.  I am stressing that the students start to write with all lowercase letters unless it is the beginning of a name or sentence. We started this week writing a story about themselves- they are excited to have their own book- we will try to get them done by open house!

Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be a 100%juice, fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.
