Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading 
We read a story this week-The Snowy Day.  This is a fun story about winter.   A little boy named Peter shows us what he does on a snowy day.  The students learned some new vocabulary with the story: snowsuit, smacking, pretended, heaping, and adventures.

Jolly Phonics 
  This week we learned the letters oi and ue and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words get, help, and now.  Remember we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week from now until the end of the year!  Please practice the words at home. 

Math 
  We continued learning about shapes and added in 3D shapes.  The students are having fun with these.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 16-20, games about shapes, math games on the i-pad, walking around the room and writing down the 3 numbers after a number on a card, sorting 2D and 3D shapes, making shapes on geo boards, and making a 3D shapes book.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We did a few review pages in handwriting this week. We are done learning all the letters in the handwriting book!  We made a craft of Peter from The Snowy Day book in his snowsuit- they are cute!  They are hanging outside the room!


**Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.  They are welcome to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day.  Please bring it filled, we do not fill water bottles during the day.  If they drink it all, then they can get water from the drinking fountain.  Thanks!**

** 100 day projects look great!  Thanks for taking the time to do those!  They are cute and creative!**

** Next Wednesday, February 3 is an early dismissal day- the students will not eat lunch here at school and are dismissed at 11:35 am.**

**Friday, February 5 is our 100th day of school- so will be a special day of lots of fun activities!**

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!




  Reading 
We read a story this week- Winter Wonderland.  This is a non-fiction story about what winter is like.  It was very winter like this week so the students could relate to it.  We also read another story- Snow by Cynthia Rylant.  We compared and contrasted the 2 stories. The students also learned some new vocabulary: gentle, vanish, astonishing, sparkle, trembling, howling, twinkling, and sneaky.

  This week we learned the letters qu and ou and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words our, here, and out.  Remember we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week from now until the end of the year!  Please practice the words at home. 

Math 
  We continued learning about shapes.  The students are having fun with these.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 16-20, games about shapes, math games on the i-pad, writing teen numbers and counting ten frames, coloring a castle of shapes, creating a face out of shapes, and making a shape robot book.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter v and w in handwriting this week.  We did a fun craft today- a picture of a child with their head back catching a snowflake.  They are cute hanging in the room!

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!




  Reading 
We read a story this week- Love You Forever.  This is a sweet story about a mom and what she does every night with her son even when he grows up. The students really enjoyed it.  The students also learned some new vocabulary: rocked, flushed, strange, and grown-up.

Jolly Phonics 
  This week we learned the letters ng and th and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words be, he, and she.  Remember we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week from now until the end of the year!  Please practice the words at home. 

Math 
  We continued learning about shapes.  The students are having fun with these.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 11-15, playing shape bingo, math games on the i-pad, writing teen numbers, using shapes to make a star, and making a 2-D shape books.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter r, n, m, and h in handwriting this week.  We made a card for our moms today- please look for it in their green folder.

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!




  Reading 
We read a story this week- The Relatives Came.  This is a great story about relatives that come from Virginia to stay with a family for a few weeks.  We were able to do some fun geography about places we have been in the U.S. and the world today.  The students also learned some new vocabulary:  tend, squeeze, wrinkled, silent, and relatives.

Jolly Phonics 
  This week we learned the letters ch and sh and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  We also learned the popcorn words the, you, and down.  As of this week, we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week!  Please practice the words at home. 

Math 
  We have started this week learning about shapes.  The students have had fun with these and really know many of the shapes already.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 11-20, making shapes with tangram pieces, math games on the i-pad, making shapes with play-doh, counting by 2's worksheet, and making shape books.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the letter u and s in handwriting this week.  We read The Mitten today and made a mitten craft with shapes and patterns on it.  These look really cute.
