Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

Happy Fall!!

Reading

We added a new part to our daily 5 this week- word work.  The students were able to use play-doh, white boards, magnetic letters, and etch-a-sketch boards to practice letters, popcorn words, and their names.  Today we did 4 sections to our daily 5.  I worked with a group as well while groups of students were listening to a story, doing word work, or reading to self.  The students did a great job with this! Mrs. Riadi also started in our classroom 4 days a week to help with reading this week.  The students liked having another teacher in the room with us.
Next week we will be incorporating poetry into a weekly theme.  Please send with your child a 1 inch white binder with a front plastic cover for our poetry unit to school next week. Thanks!

Jolly Phonics

We added the letters e and h this week to our sounds we learned.  Ask your child what the actions are that go with the sounds.  We added a new popcorn word as well- "in".  You probably noticed how the students brought home their popcorn book.  They are to keep it in their green folder in the return to school side so they can practice at home and at school.

Handwriting

We practiced some more letters and numbers this week in our handwriting book.  Capital P, B, and R and numbers 4, and 5.  Please practice these at home.

Math

We are continuing with practicing counting numbers, we did a lot with dice this week.  The students enjoy working in small groups or partners to do these counting activities.  The students are also working on writing the numbers properly from 1-10.  Mrs. Riadi will also be working with us during this time as well for 4 days out of the week.

Writing

One of the journals we did this week was on what our favorite thing to do in fall is.  The students came up with some great ideas from helping mom and dad rake leaves to apple picking!

**Remember snack should be  healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers.  If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!

We have gym every day, so please make sure your child has on gym shoes or brings gym shoes to school to wear for gym class.

We have art once a week on Tuesday with Ms. Smeltzer.

We have library twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays.  The children can check out 1 book at a time each day as long as they have returned their book.

We also have music twice a week on Thursday and Friday.  Ms. Wyse is a lot of fun.

Some students brought home star student posters to work on.  I gave the students who will be star student their posters to work on for the month of October.  Please return the posters as you finish them.  I will send home a bag with other stuff in it the Friday before your child is star student.

I am so impressed with my class on how well they are learning to do the daily 5 components.  We have been busy practicing reading to self and listening to stories on CDs.  We also read the story If You Give  Mouse A Cookie and did some fun activities with it.  The students learned some great new words as well.  Ask them what nuisance, exhausted, energetic, and generous means.

We made and played with "Mat Man" this week.  He helps us write letters and numbers correctly.

Math

We had a couple days of MAPS testing that were during our math time.  But the 3 days we did get to do math we did an activity with black dots and counting and creating a picture.  We also got to make numbers using play-doh.(I think that was their favorite!)  We also played some games with numbers and cookies!

We did a couple journals this week about what we like or dislike about kindergarten and if we let the mouse have a ball instead of a cookie, what would he do....
