Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 






  Reading 
We read a story this week- Stellaluna.  It is a great story about a bat who loses her family, so she finds a bird family and learns to live like they do.  We practiced some more with sequencing the story.  We also did some research on bats and incorporated a craft today that went with facts we learned about bats.  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- swooped, curious, grasped, and anxious.  
We are on book 5 Night of the Ninjas in the Magic Tree House books. They are really enjoying them!

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "b" and "j".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- did and not.  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We are still working on topic 4 on comparing the numbers 0-10.  We are also starting to do a lot of work with ten frames and being able to identify numbers in the ten frame- it is an easier way to count numbers when they are grouped. We did math centers this week where we practiced decomposing numbers.  This was fun and challenging for the students.  We will practice more of that next week as well. 

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase c in handwriting this week, as well as a review page.  We did a couple more Halloween crafts including a bat one to go along with Stellaluna and we made a cool Frankenstein.  We read some Halloween stories too! 
We made a star student book for Ana since she was our star student this week. 
  

**Thank you to all who took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me this past week to discuss your child's progress in kindergarten.  It is always good to hear about what your child says at home about school and anything else I can do to help make school a positive experience.  Overall, all the students have made great progress since the beginning of the year, I am very pleased to work with this group of kindergarteners! :)**

**Thanks to Mrs. Cerny, Mrs. Conley, and Mrs. Bowers for volunteering to run the class party- it was a success and the children had fun! Thanks!! **

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 






  Reading 
We read a story this week called Pumpkin, Pumpkin.  It is about a boy who plants pumpkin seeds and watches them grow into a pumpkin.  We practiced a lot with sequencing the story as well as the poem Jack-O-Lantern.  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- observe, enormous, patient, and scoop.  
We are on book 4 Pirates Past Noon in the Magic Tree House books. They are really enjoying them!

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "l" and "f".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- me and am.  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) We did 2 sight word books this week- I am Helping and Backyard Camping- see if your child can read them to you. :)

Math 
We started topic 4 on comparing the numbers 0-10.  We did math centers this week that had a lot of practicing with pumpkins and numbers.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase d and a in handwriting this week.  We got to do some fun Halloween crafts this week with the power outage- no computers=spider, ghost, and candy corn crafts!  They will look great decorating the hallway for the Halloween party tonight! :)
We also made a star student book for Caden S. since he was our star student this week.

Next week is conference week- I look forward to discussing your child's progress with you so far in kindergarten.  Friday, October 31 is the Halloween parade and party- parade is at 1:45 and the parties in the classroom start at 2:00.  Send whatever your child needs for their costume with them on Friday.  They will have time to change into their costumes before the parade.

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 






  Reading 
We read a story this week called Apples, Apples, Apples.  It is all about a family that goes apple picking and what they are going to do with the apples once they have picked them.  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- chart, limb, orchard, stem, skin, core,and flesh.  
We are on book 3 Mummies in the Morning in the Magic Tree House books. They are really enjoying them!

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "o" and "u".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- we and on.  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) We did another sight word book- Thanksgiving Dinner- see if your child can read it to you. :)

Math 
We finished topic 3 on reading, writing, counting, and comparing the numbers 6-10.  We will start topic 4 next week on comparing and ordering numbers 0-10.  They did math centers this week that had to do with apples. :)

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase o in handwriting this week.  We created a cool hand apple tree today.  We also made an apple and labeled all the parts of it- you should see that come home with them today.

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 






  Reading 
We read a story this week called When Autumn Comes.  It is all about what we do in the autumn.  We did some visualizing with this story as well- the students thought that was pretty cool!  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- autumn, preparation, ripen, and harvested.  
We also started reading the Magic Tree House books to the class- they are really enjoying them!

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "d" and "g".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- at and run.  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :) 

Math 
We are working hard on reading, writing, counting, and comparing the numbers 6-10.  We will continue with this next as well.  The students are doing really well with the math centers that we do each day.  Having fun rotating and doing different activities each day in them.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase a in handwriting this week.  We had another star student this week- so we created a book for him.  We drew a picture of what we like about Mason and then wrote a sentence about it as well.  Mason got to bring this book home.  We did a fun "Autumn" tree craft today!

Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room! 






  Reading 
We read a story this week called Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip.  It is about a kindergarten teacher who takes her class on some field trips around the community.  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- chaperone, bakery, post office, and steers.  

Jolly Phonics 
We learned about the letters "r" and "m".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- up and like.  We did another popcorn word book today for like.  It is a long book- see if your child can read it to you. 

Math 
We finished topic 2 on numbers from 0-5.  I introduced today our next topic on numbers 6-10.  We will start that next week on reading, writing and comparing numbers 6-10.

Writing/ Handwriting 
We practiced the capital and lowercase t in handwriting this week.   We created a book today called Me on A Map.  It is all about where your child lives.  We also had our first star student this week- so we created a book for him.  We drew a picture of what we like about Elias and then wrote a sentence about it as well.  This is made into a book for Elias to take home. :)
  

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  We emptied blue folders again today- so work might be coming home.  You can do it with your child but it does not need to come back to school.
Picture day is next Wednesday, October 8.  Friday, October 10 is an early dismissal day so the students will be leaving at 12:00.
