Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week called National Geographic Kids- Penguins.  It is a non-fiction story all about penguins. We learned lots of cool information about penguins!  Some vocab words we learned this week were: barb, coast, colony, equator, marine mammals and webbed.

Jolly Phonics
We learned about the letters "er" and "ar".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  This was the last of the jolly phonics sounds for the year.  We will be focusing on word families and blends till the end of the year.  This week we learned about the word family -ap.  We added 3 popcorn words- "look", "good" and "jump".  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :)

Math
We continued with topic 9 this week focusing on different ways to make addition sentences from 4-9.  We did some more winter math activities during our center time that involved addition and subtraction and more counting from different spots.

Writing/ Handwriting
We practiced the letter Mm in handwriting this week.  We made a really fun penguin craft and writing activity today!  They are hanging up in the room and came out great!  We even watched a short informational movie about penguins as well.  We did make a book this week for Aubrey K. since she was our star student.

The 100th day project came out great!  Thanks for sending those in! :)

Next week we do not have school on Friday,February 13 and we have an early dismissal on Wednesday, February 11.  So, it is a short week!

Thursday, February 12 we will be having our Valentine parties.  If you are sending in Valentines for the students- please do not put names on the envelopes- the students cannot read all the names of the students and it would take too long to try to pass all those out.  They can bring in 20 cards that they signed for each student.

Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be a 100%juice, fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.

Have a wonderful weekend!
