Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week- Stellaluna.  It is a great story about a bat who loses her family, so she finds a bird family and learns to live like they do.  We practiced some more with sequencing the story.  We also did some research on bats and incorporated a craft today that went with facts we learned about bats.  We learned some new vocabulary words that went with the story- swooped, curious, grasped, and anxious.
We are on book 5 Night of the Ninjas in the Magic Tree House books. They are really enjoying them!

Jolly Phonics
We learned about the letters "b" and "j".  Ask your child about the sounds and actions that go with those letters.  We added 2 popcorn words- did and not.  Please practice the popcorn words at home. :)

Math
We are still working on topic 4 on comparing the numbers 0-10.  We are also starting to do a lot of work with ten frames and being able to identify numbers in the ten frame- it is an easier way to count numbers when they are grouped. We did math centers this week where we practiced decomposing numbers.  This was fun and challenging for the students.  We will practice more of that next week as well.

Writing/ Handwriting
We practiced the capital and lowercase c in handwriting this week, as well as a review page.  We did a couple more Halloween crafts including a bat one to go along with Stellaluna and we made a cool Frankenstein.  We read some Halloween stories too!
We made a star student book for Ana since she was our star student this week.

**Thank you to all who took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me this past week to discuss your child's progress in kindergarten.  It is always good to hear about what your child says at home about school and anything else I can do to help make school a positive experience.  Overall, all the students have made great progress since the beginning of the year, I am very pleased to work with this group of kindergarteners! :)**

**Thanks to Mrs. Cerny, Mrs. Conley, and Mrs. Bowers for volunteering to run the class party- it was a success and the children had fun! Thanks!! **
Have a great, long weekend!  We do not have school Monday or Tuesday next week- November 3 and 4.
Stay safe and warm tonight for trick or treating!
