Mrs. Olsen's 4th Grade Blog

Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year!

This will be a weekly reminder of what is coming up in the following week.  I will send it out as an email to the parents on Fridays.

General reminders:
1.  Binders should come back and forth to school everyday with your child.  Please check their binders for homework.
2. Make sure chromebooks are charged before coming to school everyday.
3.  Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns you have with your child. jolsen@ccsd66.org

This is what we will be working on for the week of January 13-17, 2020!

Spelling:
We have been learning our new words this week and will continue with the same ones next week.  They all have to do with mythology.  Our test will be Friday, January 17.

English/Reading::
We started our unit on mythology.  The students are enjoying learning about the allusions and we have had some fun talking about the myths as well.  I am introducing the project this afternoon they will be working on for the next week.  They will be teaching the myth they choose to the class through a project- newspaper article, song, slide show, play, etc.  These will be fun to see!  We are also adding to our RACES writing form this week.  We will be practicing more on written responses using this full form now.

Social Studies/Science:
The students this week learned about the Cherokee Native American tribe from the southeast.  We will be filling out our SE portion of our USA map next week.  We also took a quiz today on the Cherokee using their books as guidance.  In science, we started chapter 3 on energy conversions, we are talking about energy sources and where the energy comes from!

SEL:
Next week we will continue to learn more about emotion management.

Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:
We started unit 4 on place value and the standard algorithm of addition.  The students are doing well so far this week on these topics.  We will have a work sample, I will be taking a grade on, on Monday, January 13.  They have 5 addition or subtraction problems.  They need to solve them and pick which method they used and tell why they chose the method they did.  This should not be hard for them, they seem to be ready for this!  We then have a checkpoint on Tuesday, January 14.  This will be on rounding, writing numbers in expanded form and written form, addition, and comparing numbers.

Important Info:
Thursday, January 16- we will be going to Oak Trace to read and play games with senior citizens living there.  **Please make sure your child comes to school with games and books to bring with to play and read with the seniors.**

Next Monday- Wednesday we will have some common assessments we will be taking for ELA and math.

Monday, January 20- no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.

Thanks to the parents who donated tissue boxes already!  I appreciate it! :)

** We are down to our final tissue boxes for the year! If anyone would like to donate a box or two it would be greatly appreciated!  These 4 boxes won't last till June!! I have a ton of plastic bags- I will send your child home with plastic bags in place of the tissue boxes contribution! :)

Happy New Year!!

Have a great weekend!
