Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

 Reading
We read the story Cookie's Week and worked on the skill visualizing again.  We did learn 4 new vocabulary words- amusing, upset, grin, and stuck.  Ask your child what they mean.   We read a poem this week called The Snowman Ran and Ran.  We did do daily 5 rotations this week, adding our new rotation- working on writing.  The students did a good job with this.   You will see coming home lists of words, cards for family or friends, stories, or drawing a picture and labeling it.  These are their choices when they are at the station.

Jolly Phonics
We added the letter "ng" and "th" this week to our sounds. Ask your child what the action is that goes with the 2 sounds. We added three new popcorn words as well- "he", "she", and "be". Point out the popcorn words in stories you read to your children as well. Then, when they are reading to self during daily 5 they will recognize those words and be proud that they can read them.

Handwriting
We did not get to any handwriting this week.  But we are doing more writing in our new daily 5 rotation.

Math
We did do centers this week on place value.  The students did really well with this. I also did a couple small things on shapes.  We will focus on shapes next week in our centers.

Writing
We wrote and drew something we like about Samantha since she was our star student for the week. We also made a penguin craft using all sorts of shapes.
We did finish all of our testing for MAPS and AIMSWEB the past 2 weeks.  Next week on Friday, January 24 progress reports will be sent home to only the students who are not meeting in all areas.

** Next week on Monday, January 20, we do not have school due to the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day**

**Remember snack should be healthy , such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, or crackers. If you are sending a juice, make sure it is 100% juice.** Thanks!
