Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

Happy Fall!

Reading

We read a story this week called Pumpkin, Pumpkin.  It is about a little boy who plants pumpkin seeds and watches his seed sprout and become a pumpkin.  We worked on retelling the story by using the pictures. We learned 4 new words to go along with the story- observe, enormous, patient, and scoop.  We also read the poem- November.

Jolly Phonics

We added the letters "oa" and "ie" this week to our sounds we learned.  Ask your child what the action is that goes with the 2 sounds.  We added three new popcorn words as well- "am", "did", and "not".  Point out the popcorn words in stories you read to your children as well.  Then, when they are reading to self during daily 5 they will recognize those words and be proud that they can read them.

Handwriting

We did capital Z this week in handwriting.

Math

We did centers this whole week practicing lots of different skills.  We practiced more with ten frames for the numbers 11-20, played a game called race to 20 using race cars, sorted and counted according to color, and practiced counting on dominoes.

Writing

We wrote, drew, and shared journals on what we did over the long weekend.  We also practiced writing and making our popcorn words with magnetic letters.
