Kindergarten News in Mrs.Olsen's Room!

  Reading
We read a story this week-National Geographic Penguins.  This is a great non-fiction story learning all about penguins.  The students learned some new vocabulary with the story: barb, coast, equator, marine mammals, and webbed.

Jolly Phonics
This week we learned the letters er and ar and the actions that goes with them.  Ask your child what sounds they make and what actions go with those sounds. :)  Those are the last of the Jolly Phonics sounds we will be learning for the year!  We also learned the popcorn words look, good, and jump.  Remember we will be learning 3 new popcorn words each week from now until the end of the year!  Please practice the words at home. We will be focusing on the word families and making CVC words till the end of the year.

Math
We continued learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  The students are having fun with these.  We did math centers where the students had to stamp with numbers 16-20, games about shapes, math games on the i-pad, walking around the room and writing down the 3 numbers before a number on a card, sorting 3D shapes, tallying up marshmallows, and another shape game.

Writing/ Handwriting
We are working on practicing writing our numbers in the handwriting book now. We made a cute penguin craft to go with our book we read this week.  These were fun!

**Please remember to send in a HEALTHY snack for your child- cookies and treats are not healthy snacks.  It needs to be fruits or vegetables preferably, otherwise crackers or something like that.  They are welcome to bring in a water bottle to drink during the day.  Please bring it filled, we do not fill water bottles during the day.  If they drink it all, then they can get water from the drinking fountain.  Thanks!**

** 100 day was fun- we did a bunch of fun activities today centered around the number 100!**

** Next Friday, February 12 and Monday, February 15 is no school.**

**Thursday, February 11 is our valentine party from 1:30-2:30.  We have 19 students in the class.  Please send in valentines for the whole class and just have your child sign his or her name.  Please don't put the students names on the envelopes.  We will pass them out for everyone.**
